Arabic Trance Becomes 60s Rock

I realised that I’ve written completely new music for my Arabic trance piece Not Just Believe. Since the melody used the double harmonic scale (commonly called the Arabic scale because of how it finds) it can’t be sung over regular chords.

What I’ve done is shift the melody to work with some rather odd minor chords, and change the rhythm to be more singable when I perform it alone.

I’m considering it completely new music. I’ll record a demo of it tomorrow.

Suite for a New Life

Am F
if it all fell apart and ended in a ditch

          C G
we'd have no one but ourselves to thank
we set out with nothing to our names
but our clothes and the gas in the tank

nothing we had was making sense anymore
so we set out to find something else
you seemed pretty sure and I didn't wanna scare you
so I kept my doubts to myself

andante (very slowly)
Em Am
as we slipped away
you held my hand so tight I couldn't breathe
Em Am G
drove into a sunrise full of colors I knew didn't exist

C G F G
I thought we'd find a new place of our own
didn't know you were such a rolling stone
shaking off the moss, heading out into the great unknown

we didn't know the world was so wide
once you let go; knots are untied
its beauty's just a mirror of the beauty we all have inside

(rhythm shift to "With the Radio On")

life getting in the way

I sorta burned out, getting my 11/11/11 book release party done, then redesigning, and this week turns out the be the first visit of our CO so we’re going out in service 5 days in a row.

Still wanna make it, get 3 new songs written. But I don’t want my lack of participation and leadership to slow y’all down.

Through-composed song about life

Through-composed means each section has a different format, but it’s not repeated; there’s no verse/chorus stuff. It’s more like classical music. I’ve never done this before. This is the rough early outline.

intro is pensive
Am F C G (assuming key of C; otherwise
6m 4 1 5    simple numeric notation)

next bit is perky
1 5 4 5

final section is silly happy
C Am F G
1 6m 4 5

adding your own post on the site

I’m adding a link in the sidebar so you can write stuff here. this is the page you can bookmark if you like:

or you can just use the “post something to the site” link at the top of the sidebar.

it’ll ask you to log in, then take you to a page where you can fill stuff in. remember to hit “publish” before you close the window, or all your lovely words will die a horrible flaming death. with cheez whiz. that’s the worst kind of flaming death.

restringing a classical guitar

my battered old yamaha needed strings when we got it (traded 5 minutes of sue’s time on a web task for it; yeehaw!)

I let it sit around for months wishing I had five bucks for strings and one day opened the gig bag and I already had some (bought ’em the day I got the guitar. d’oh.)

no ball ends or anything cool; knots behind the bridge. never done hand-tied strings before, but it worked out. now I have to play it every day to get the strings worn in so they’ll hold a tuning.

how ’bout you? what are you doing to get your gear ready?

first 333 challenge begins sunday, november 20th

get out your quills and inkwell. tune up your lute. clear a table near a sunny window.

as soon as it’s november 20th where you are, start writing.

some time before then, you’ll have access to post your lyrics and ideas and pleas for help on this site, and get all the help we can muster.

it all wraps up at midnight, saturday the 26th.
