Good Ol’ Manly Cry

(Copying some FAWM songs here so I have them all in one place.)

Guess you’ve been gone
Long enough
Cause I’m alright
Only two times that miss you
One’s day, the other’s night
Sunshine reminds me of your hair
In the dark, I almost think you’re there
Think it’s time I sat down and had me
A good old manly cry

Fixed you breakfast
Just this morning
Like I used to do
Perfect bacon and fried potatoes
Scrambled eggs for two
I must have left it there half the day
Then I got mad and threw it all away
Think it’s time I sat down and had me
A good old manly cry

Think it’s time I sat down and told myself
You’re really gone
Think it’s time I sat down and realized
That from now on
Won’t be cooking for two
But I’ll be wondering
What do I do?
Think it’s time I sat down and had me
A good old manly cry

Took a sick day Last week
The boss wondered what was wrong
Whatever it was I mumbled sounded like something
From a whiny country song
I spent
The whole day
Looking out the window at the dust the settled as you drove away
Think it’s time I sat down and had me
A good old manly cry

Think it’s time I sat down and told myself
You’re really gone
Think it’s time I sat down and realized
That from now on
Won’t be cooking for two
But I’ll be wondering
What do I do?
Think it’s time I sat down and had me
A good old manly cry

Guess you’ve been gone
Long enough
Cause I’m alright

Every Happy Love Song

seems like every happy love song sounds the same
them country singers are the ones I blame
I hear those pretty tunes of moons and junes and pretty soon
I’m hoping for a minor key and just a little misery

seems like every happy love song sounds the same
I think those britpop singers are to blame
you know those tears will start so they can rhyme with broken heart
and I’m hoping for a minor key so they’ll politely disagree

seems like every happy love song sounds the same
I’ll bet all those old jazz singers are to blame
you can bet their sorrow will still be around tomorrow
and I’m hoping for a minor key and maybe epic tragedy

why does every dance
involve taking a chance?
amazing that a light
can brighten up the night
and that star
down at the bar
is gonna go far

seems like every happy love song sounds the same
maybe those folky popsters are to blame
do they really think that girl will ever rhyme with world?
and I’m hoping for a minor key and lovers who are absentee

seems like every happy love song sounds the same
I think I know exactly who to blame
I hear those pretty tunes of moons and junes and pretty soon
I’m hoping for a minor key and just a little misery
seems like every happy love song sounds the same

More Than Love

I’m going to start posting older songs so I have all my music in one place.

This demo was recorded at Ray’s Barn, a studio owned by a marvelous musician named Ray Brown. My first time in a studio, I was so nervous my throat practically closed and I found myself muscling my way through every song.

I learned all about words when I was just a lad
Reading piles of books like my mom and my dad
Merriam Webster was a good friend to me
Shakespeare and Seuss suited me to a tee
There must be a word I’ll find so apropos
I don’t know it yet but here’s one thing I know

It’s more than love
There must be a name
It’s more than love
That fires the flame
I look into your eyes
And I find myself there
Look into your heart
And I’m walking on air
I don’t know what it is
But it’s more than love

I know so many words about living and life
So many words about husband and wife
Words like forever and words like forgive
Words like together as long as we live
But I can’t seem to find the right word for the way
I keep feeling inside, so here’s all I can say

It’s more than love
There must be a name
It’s more than love
That fires the flame
I look into your eyes
And I find myself there
Look into your heart
And I’m walking on air
I don’t know what it is
But it’s more than love

Words might never say
The way you make me feel
But I’ll keep trying
Until I find
The one word that’s ideal

I’ve read millions of words in those books on the shelf
And there’s ten thousand more that I’ve written myself
You’d think one of these would say just what I mean
But they all seem to fall below or between
I know so many word that say just what it’s no
But I’ll try to describe it with words that I’ve got

It’s more than love
There must be a name
It’s more than love
That fires the flame
I look into your eyes
And I find myself there
Look into your heart
And I’m walking on air
I don’t know what it is
But it’s more than love
I don’t know what it is
But it’s more than love

Strikes

Great big storm behind the mountain
See a flash, start counting
Feel the fire, crackling breeze
Thunder rumbles right up to your knees
Lightning

Flash so bright you lose the sky
Feels like Armageddon’s nigh
Push down, move faster
Driving down the throat of disaster
Lightning

High voltage electrical whine
Into my ears through the telephone line
I hear the words, feel the frisson
You talked, I didn’t listen
Lightning

Tires rip the dark wet road
Under-thinking overload
A hundred miles in nothing flat
Never let you go like that
Lightning

Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Lightning

The Time Between

someone else I know died and this one sort of forced itself out

I don’t believe in any angel of death
Don’t believe in any great Grim Reaping
I know it comes to us all
But I believe what some folks call
Eternity ain’t forever, they’re only sleeping

I don’t believe in Fates snipping threads
I don’t believe your time has gotta come
If it was set at birth
What’s living worth?
That’d be unfair to the smart, too kind to the dumb

I made a choice to write and sing this song
And you can choose to listen
Or even sing along
We’re making our own way
Every day
Doing what’s right
And knowing what’s wrong

Songs like this sorta make you squirm
No one likes to talk about the end
Hey, I’m with you
I’m uncomfortable too
And we’ll both get through it talking friend to friend

I made a choice to write and sing this song
And you can choose to listen
Or even sing along
We’re making our own way
Every day
Doing what’s right
And knowing what’s wrong

We’ve all lost someone we love, and we miss ’em
The hole some people leave is surreal
While I’m done singing this rhyme
You ought to take the time
To tell the folks you love the way you feel

I made a choice to write and sing this song
And you can choose to listen
Or even sing along
We’re making our own way
Every day
Doing what’s right
And knowing what’s wrong

Maricopa

this one wrote itself

ABQ

Leaving Maricopa in a cloud of dust
Ain’t nobody back there gonna follow us
They can stay right there ’cause we ain’t done nothin’ wrong
And we’ll be in Albuquerque by the time they know we’re gone

Leaving Maricopa in a borrowed car
I know we said we wouldn’t have to go that far
But she’ll be busy hanging out with her friends down at the salon
And we’ll be in Albuquerque by the time they know we’re gone

Leaving Maricopa at the speed of night
Had to take the car, couldn’t catch a flight
Heading east on 40 face-first into the dawn
And we’ll be in Albuquerque by the time they know we’re gone

We’ll go to Babylon
Maybe the Amazon
We’ll run this marathon
Up to Saskatchewan
Maybe we’ll go to St. Louis and see that big mastodon
Right now we’ll be in Albuquerque by the time they know we’re gone

Leaving Maricopa in a cloud of dust
Smelling like grease and looking like rust
Tomorrow I’ll be dressed up in silk and you’ll be in chiffon
And we’ll be in Albuquerque by the time they know we’re gone

Breathing

whaletale

He drove the harpoon into its great white head
Over and over and it still wasn’t dead
Tangled in the lines as the beast went down
If he didn’t kill it now he was gonna drown

Maniacal hatred for he great white whale
The end of its life was the end of his tale

What if the whale had loved Ahab?
It’d never submerge
If the whale had loved Ahab
It’d give up the deep
So Ahab could keep—
If the whale had loved Ahab
Been able to purge
The notions that surge and flood
In the blood
If the whale had loved Ahab
We’d be on the verge
Might take the leap
Maybe we’d all keep
Breathing

Life and death for the captain and crew
It was life and death for the great whale, too
It wasn’t a hunt to fill any need
It was vengeance, it was anger, it was lust, it was greed

He vowed to hunt it to the end of the sea
And now it’s life and death for you and me

What if the whale had loved Ahab?
It’d never submerge
If the whale had loved Ahab
It’d give up the deep
So Ahab could keep—
If the whale had loved Ahab
Been able to purge
The notions that surge and flood
In the blood
If the whale had loved Ahab
We’d be on the verge
Might take the leap
Maybe we’d all keep
Breathing

Late Night Intrigue

this heat is killing me
there’s too many people here
that look is chilling me
intentions are unclear

well dressed man in a corner booth
I think he’s been watching us
maybe we’ll slip out the back
leave him in the dust

late night intrigue
playing games with a roomful of strangers
we’re out of our league
but we’re having a ball despite all the dangers
and we’re scoping it out like a couple Lone Rangers
yeah playing our games with a roomful of strangers
tonight

we love the risk, we like the chase
nobody knows our names
slip outside of the human race
before it goes down in flames

I’m tracking you and you’re tracking me
leaving the herd behind
Your code is hacking me
Messing with my mind

late night intrigue
playing games with a roomful of strangers
we’re out of our league
but we’re having a ball despite all the dangers
and we’re scoping it out like a couple Lone Rangers
yeah playing our games with a roomful of strangers
tonight

this heat is killing me
there’s too many people here
this heat is killing me
there’s too many people here
    there’s too many people here
there’s too many people here
    there’s too many people here
there’s too many people here
tonight

Home Like No Place (Me and Stephen Foster and Boll Weevil)

Huddie sang about that old boll weevil
And how that bug was looking for a home
Every time I hear that song
Seems he got it wrong
I know that old bug just liked to roam

Even Stephen Foster’s great plantation
And old folks at home were far away
How ever many times
We all sing Stephen’s rhymes
He’s wandering creation to this day

Me and Stephen Foster and boll weevil
We’re travelers not looking for a home
Roads rambled, rivers crossed
Some wanderers ain’t lost
We’re forty years from the milk and the honeycomb

Life ain’t some great eternal baseball game
There’s more for you and me than rounding third
Every child knows the poem
There’s no place like home
Don’t you believe everything you’ve heard

Me and Stephen Foster and boll weevil
We’re travelers not looking for a home
Roads rambled, rivers crossed
Some wanderers ain’t lost
We’re forty years from the milk and the honeycomb

Best beloved’s sitting by the fire
Simm’ring supper smell fills the air
But when Foster and the bug
Look up from the rug
You’d best believe they’ll take you off somewhere

Me and Stephen Foster and boll weevil
We’re travelers not looking for a home
Roads rambled, rivers crossed
Some wanderers ain’t lost
We’re forty years from the milk and the honeycomb
We’re forty years from the milk and the honeycomb

Light

out on the horizon a tiny light’s starting to glow
and even though I’m here in the dark as I watch it I know
something good’s heading our way
something brighter than the brightest day
as if someone out there wants to say
not much longer to go

it’s dark down here but you don’t have to go it alone
sometimes it can be hard to make it to the light on your own
take my hand and together we’ll see
what the brightness turns out to be
when it’s shining on you and me
and all the seeds that we’ve sown

together we’ll watch as the light
brings an end to this night
listen, and you can’t help but hear the sound
it’s right there, take my hand
open your eyes, and we’ll stand
in the light as it grows all around

out on the horizon a tiny light’s starting to glow
